About our Founder

Jonathan Brendefur, PhD is the president of the Developing Mathematical Thinking Institute (DMTI), which partners with school districts in 8+ states to provide math professional development and curricular resources to improve math understanding and achievement.

He was a professor of Mathematics Education at Boise State University for 20 years (2000 - 2020). Dr. Brendefur was the BSU Foundation Teacher of the Year (2019) and the Director of the Mathematical Thinking for Instruction for 10 years, where he designed, oversaw, and provided professional development for over 14,000 teachers and administrators.

He also wrote and directed 13 grants ($18 million) and built a seven-course math education graduate program for K-8 teachers, which graduated over 250 teachers in six years.

He has written numerous chapters, journal articles, technical reports, and curricular resources, has presented over 80 conference papers, and has just published his first book on Math Facts. His area of research and knowledge is on mathematical learning progressions, student learning, teaching, professional development, and curriculum.
