Professional Development & Resources

Strengthen Teacher Knowledge.
Deepen Student Understanding.

A coherent journey through all K-8* math topics. Built on 40+ years of research, validated in classrooms, designed for teachers, with personalized support.

The Challenge

Most districts are not struggling from a lack of materials. They are struggling from a lack of instructional coherence.

  • Students rely on procedures without understanding the math behind them
  • Learning gaps persist and compound across grade levels
  • Teachers are stretched thin and want a clearer pathway for conceptual instruction

Our Approach

DMTI helps teachers strengthen three essential areas that drive mathematics learning.

Mathematics

Concepts, representations, structures, and progressions that help students make sense of math

Cognitive Science

How students build lasting conceptual understanding and connect new learning

Instruction

Visual models, purposeful questioning, precise language, and carefully sequenced tasks

Teachers often combine multiple curricula and supplemental resources, with the average teacher reporting using two core curricula and five supplemental resources, according to Education Week's summary of RAND's American Instructional Resources Survey.

DMTI helps schools move beyond simply choosing materials toward building the teacher knowledge and instructional practice needed to improve student understanding.

Phase 4 · Capstone

Year-Long Classroom Partnership

The standard DMTI Partnership is the foundation. Two flexible models build on it to fit different school and district needs.

Outcome: stronger student understanding and achievement over time.

DMTI Partnership

4–10 days/year of lesson studies, unit studies, demonstration lessons, classroom-based coaching, and direct collaboration with teachers and students throughout the year.

4–10 Days/Year Coaching Lesson Studies
Standard

DMTI Partnership

The core partnership model. Lesson studies, unit studies, demonstration lessons, classroom-based coaching, and direct collaboration with teachers and students throughout the year.

4–10 days/year · Foundation for all models

Model A

All-Teachers Model

Every teacher in a school or district participates together. Lesson studies, demonstration lessons, and coaching reach all teachers, building shared language and instructional coherence across grade levels.

For schools or districts ready to commit every classroom to the same approach.

Model B

Cohort Model

A small team from each building: a coach or administrator, one primary teacher, and one intermediate teacher, works with DMTI together. The same days cover multiple buildings, accelerating implementation across the district.

For districts wanting to reach more schools quickly with a coordinated team-based approach.

Summer Program: Summer School

A focused student-facing program that pairs targeted student instruction with teacher coaching. Designed to fit between the school year and the work that follows.

  • Four 2-week sessions across 8 weeks
  • In-person, virtual, or hybrid delivery
  • Targeted instruction on the skills students need most for the year ahead
  • Teacher coaching woven into the program
What Sets Us Apart

Support that teachers
never knew existed.

When teachers realize they can connect directly with math learning experts, to ask questions, send photos of student work, discuss lessons, and get full support with their math instruction. Everything changes.

Direct Access to Experts

Teachers connect directly with math learning experts. Send photos of student work, ask questions about lessons, discuss instructional approaches. Real support from real people who understand the math and the classroom.

Embedded Coaching

Demonstration lessons, co-teaching, and classroom-based coaching throughout the year. Not a one-and-done workshop; ongoing partnership that builds teacher confidence and skill over time.

Measurable Results

Progress reporting that shows the impact. When teachers see their students' growth, and share those results with colleagues, interest and buy-in spread organically across the school.

Year one is realistic. We meet teachers where they are. A few foundational adjustments, not an overwhelming overhaul. Teachers try it, see it working, and want more.

The results speak for themselves. We measure progress and provide reporting that teachers can share. When colleagues see the data, and hear firsthand what the support feels like, they want in.

Teachers discover a level of quality and personalized support they never knew existed. They see the benefit in their students and their classroom. Math becomes their favorite subject to teach.

Who We Are

Built by educators,
for educators.

Behind every DMTI partnership is a team of PhD researchers and master coaches who've spent decades in real classrooms, not just studying math education, but doing it alongside teachers every week.

The Research

Why Early Math Matters

Research consistently shows that early mathematics skills are foundational for later math learning and are among the strongest predictors of later reading and overall academic success, often surpassing the predictive power of early reading skills.
